2008 National Basketball Tournament

 

What is it?

 

The National Basketball Tournament is a two-day tournament with twelve collegiate and alumni teams competing and having fun in the fraternal spirit of Beta Sigma Psi.

 

When is it?

 

Games take place both on Saturday, following MEF seminars, and on Sunday, following the Awards Breakfast and large-group MEF program.

 

Where is it?

 

Saturday’s games will be held at the Midwest Sports Challenge Building in north Columbia, while Sunday’s games will be played at the Mizzou Rec Center.

 

What is the format?

 

Teams will be organized into four three-team brackets, with round-robin play on Saturday.  The top two teams in each bracket will move into a single-elimination championship tournament with placement games on Sunday.  The other four teams will play a recreational tournament also on Sunday.  Each team is guaranteed at least four games over the course of the two days.

 

What are the playing rules?

 

  • 10-minute halves w/ running clock
    • 1st half – clock stops on timeouts
    • 2nd half – clock stops in final 2 minutes & on timeouts
    • no overtime
  • Timeouts
    • 1 60-sec. timeout per game
    • 2 30-sec. timeouts per game
  • Fouls
    • 4 team fouls = bonus
    • 6 team fouls = double bonus
    • 4 personal fouls = ejection
    • 1 technical foul = ejection + 1-game suspension
    • 2 technical fouls = tournament disqualification
    • “and 1” fouls = free throw automatically counts
  • Team Scoring

o       Win = 3 points

o       Tie = 1 point

o       Win by ≥ 15 points = 4 points

o       Loss by ≤ 10 points = 1 point

o       Player gets ejected = -½ point

 

What are the playing eligibility requirements?

 

In order to play, collegiate members must attend all sessions of the MEF and be listed on the official team roster.  Missing any session will result in a one-point team penalty per session missed, with the possibility of forfeiting games.  Each participant in the tournament must sign a form assuming personal liability for any injuries or illnesses.

 

How do you register a team?

 

Registration forms are available here.  Teams must register by Wednesday, January 9th, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

 

How much does registering a team cost?

 

The registration fee is $100 per team.  Registration must be mailed to the National Office and postmarked by the registration date.
